How To Make A Generic Hollywood Soft-Reboot - Rant

Wiki Article

What do Star Wars: A Force Awakens, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Jurassic World, Halloween, Scream and Terminator: Dark Fate all have in common? They are all soft-reboots... and incredibly generic movies. That doesn't mean they are bad but it certainly means they are not creative in the slightest. These films exist mainly to start up a new trilogy or series of films. Typically with a next generation of characters that have similar traits as their parents or relatives. These films also rely very heavily on nostalgia. This is done through callbacks, easter eggs, slowed-down theme songs and even original actors returning. The problem these soft-reboots have typically, is they can't really stand on their own. They are so closely tied to the tried-and-true formate and refuse to break the cycle. In fact, most of these movies listed have the same threats, just presented in a slightly different way. Old characters are often mistreated or played differently from the originals. The tone is usually much more somber too and lacks the playful spirit of the first. Today I show you just how easy it is to script these types of movies and why Hollywood should stop using this playbook. It's tired and I fear they are just getting started. Gremlins, Goonies, Back to the Future and many other classics are just waiting to be ruined.
